The Becker-Stachlewitz House
was the early residence of John M. B. Sill, Principal of the Michigan State
Normal School (Eastern Michigan University). It was soon purchased by Charles
J. Becker, a traveling salesman, who had the tower built in 1889, and probably
the front porch as well, to enhance the building’s appearance on what was
then a very prestigious street. The ‘onion’ dome on the tower is of Byzantine
derivation and unique in the community. The house is one of five designated
landmark buildings which, though outside its boundaries, are part of the
Historic District.
